OUTSIDE THE BOX: Fermon Construction thrives on creativity, and customers win

Company’s first project – owner’s home – was an early indicator that no challenge was too big

Among the core strengths of Fermon Construction Ltd. is the company’s ability to adapt to the needs and desires of its customers.

If someone wants a square peg in a round hole, Fermon Construction will find a way.

The company’s owner and president just so happened to be its first “customer,” with a unique request for himself.

“It’s on the corner and the corner isn’t square,” Fermon Martin recalled of his first project, the three-bedroom, 2,600 sq.-ft. dream home he completed in 2012 to coincide with his marriage to Rachel, who serves as the company’s office manager. “We made it fit to the lot.”

With picture windows throughout, the Hawkesville, Ont. home is drenched in natural light, including two sunbeams in the form of the couple’s young daughters, Zoey and Brooklyn.

It’s that project that set Fermon Construction in motion. The company’s reputation as a trusted leader in full-service construction, though, continues to be cemented with each quality completed project and smiling customer.

Fermon Construction specializes in agricultural and industrial construction, commercial development and residential design and build. They’ll tackle everything from steel buildings to full-scale residential renovations, floor grinding and finishing, feed mills, foundations and beyond.

If it can be built, Fermon Construction is interested, no matter the scale or challenge.

“Our company has never fit into a box,” said Fermon, who draws from hard-working Mennonite farming roots and more than 25 years of overall construction experience, including owning his own canoe-building business.

Integrity and respect are at the heart of Fermon Construction’s values. Its group of 10-20 employees is viewed as an extended family while commitment to quality craftsmanship is what the company’s loyal customer base throughout Southern Ontario has come to expect.

Recognizing a gap in the industry, Fermon and Rachel recently started a second company, Z Bin Rentals, allowing customers in the Waterloo Region and surrounding areas to access hands-off disposal solutions for construction and renovation projects.

The latest business is yet another example of that pivoting nature and ability to do things a bit differently.

After all, outside the box is how Fermon Construction began and how it continues to thrive today.

“If you want a square house built on Geddes Street, we’ll do that,” Fermon said. “Construction to suit your needs. From start to finish.”
